Belitung Island: Restoring Coral Reefs and Releasing Rescued Sea Turtles

Empowering Local Communities: A Mission of Marine Stewardship

After months of dedicated planning and collaboration, our team recently embarked on a transformative journey to Belitung Island, Indonesia. At The Only One Ocean Corp., we believe in the power of community to drive positive change. Our recent expedition to Belitung Island, Indonesia, was a testament to this belief. We joined forces with local communities, armed with a shared mission: to restore damaged coral reefs and protect endangered sea turtles.

Combating Coral Reef Damage:

Ocean tin mining involves dredging the seabed, disrupting marine habitats and releasing harmful sediments into the water.

Healthy coral reefs are vital ecosystems teeming with marine life. Locals livelihood as fishermen and tourist guide depends on the healthy ocean and corals. Unfortunately, these underwater wonders face numerous threats -in Belitung- illegal tin mining that drowned the coral reef with sediments. By partnering with local Belitung Island communities, we aimed to provide crucial support for coral reef restoration efforts.

Equipping for Success:

Through our supporters generous donations, we were able to equip local conservationists with the necessary knowledge, tools and equipment to effectively restore coral reefs. This empowered them to actively participate in the fight for a healthier ocean. By empowering locals, we're fostering a sense of ownership and ensuring long-term sustainability.

Sea Turtle Release: A Celebration of Survival

Our trip to Belitung Island wasn't solely focused on coral reefs. We also had the humbling privilege of participating in a sea turtle release program. Witnessing these majestic creatures return to their natural habitat was a powerful reminder of the importance of ocean conservation. Sea turtles, facing the threat of extinction, are often targeted for their eggs. This unsustainable practice stems from a lack of knowledge about the critical ecological services they provide, including maintaining the health of coral reefs and seagrass beds.
