The vast ocean provides sustenance and livelihoods for millions, but the challenges faced by coastal communities often remain unseen. Beyond braving the waves, fishermen's wives are the silent pillars of these communities, managing household finances and nurturing families on often unpredictable incomes.
Since March 2024, Only One Ocean has joined forces with FishLog Indonesia, a leading seafood startup, and the Neira Foundation to empower fishermen's wives in Rembang, Central Java. Together, they've launched the Financial Literacy Workshop, equipping these remarkable women with the knowledge and tools to build a brighter future for themselves and their families.
This impactful initiative has been met with tremendous enthusiasm from participants, highlighting the community's desire to thrive
Why it is crucial for ocean's future?
Financial instability:Â Fluctuations in catches, coupled with limited financial literacy, can leave families vulnerable to economic hardship.
Unfulfilled potential:Â Many skilled and enterprising women lack access to resources and guidance to launch small businesses, contributing to their economic dependence.
Sustainable future:Â By empowering women with financial knowledge, we foster responsible spending, investment, and potentially eco-friendly ventures, contributing to the well-being of both families and the ocean.
Our workshops go beyond basic household management. We equip participants with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive. This includes how to manage their finances effectively, and provide them Direct Market Access with financial institutions and seafood processors, ensuring they receive a fair price for their harvests, eliminating exploitative middlemen and incentivizing responsible fishing practices.
By equipping women with financial knowledge and fairer market access, this initiative directly combats overfishing in your coastal areas. This not only secures a brighter future for your families but also protects the valuable ocean ecosystems that sustain your communities.
